In our chapter about the Need for Water in Ancient Times, document 8 are sections from the Code of Hammurabi.
In that document it says, "If a man neglects to maintain his dike and does not strengthen it, and a break s made in his dike and the water carries away the farmland, the man in whose dike the break has been made shall replace the grain which has been damaged."
What if the man in question was renting the land from a landlord? Who is responsible to maintain the dike? The farmer renting the land or the landlord?
